Entertainment Engineering

Electrical engineering is proffitable for one's own pocketbook, but it is Entertainment Engineering that is proffitable for the soul of the engineer.  Today, the gift of enjoyment through music, movies, the performing and fine arts, special events, etc, is greatly enhnaced, if not made solely possible by, technology.  The mastering of this technology, the ability to create and control a system that extends the reach, the expressiveness, the impact of an art event is what Entertainment Engineering is all about.

EE is an offspring of electrical engineering.  One must have a good working knowledge of electronics, their abilities and limitations, and a little about the theory behind the magic.  The term is also an offspring of the later.  Everything from home-theatres, to automobile stereos, to full-fledged concert-style sound systems can be designed, built, and manipulated by the entertainment engineer.  Not only are we kowledgable about the immediate audio realm, but also in the radio and telecom fields as well.  Not only are we adept with things dealing with sound, but also in lighting and special effects, both at the show and on film.  We dabble with any and everything dealing with technology aiding to bring content of any medium to any audience; that's what we're all about.

The New River Valley's ONLY music alternative.

Makers of the WUVT-FM xmitter!

To keep my EE abilities in practice, I serve as Assistant Engineer at Radio WUVT AM/FM, Virginia Tech's student-run radio station located in Blacksburg, VA.  WUVT broadcasts at 90.7 MHz at 3 kW ERP, as well as over the web via Real Audio stream.  We run a Broadcast Engineering xmitter at 3.4 kW PEP, using a single 4CX3500A in the final hole.&nbps; My responsibilities extend from maintaining the xmitter and all her components to the studios (there are three of them) and all the equipment found there.  It's mostly a job of watching things, seeing how equipment is behaving to prevent problems before they get out of hand.  Aside from the pure fun of it, this is a prime reason why I am also a DJ at the station.

VODMuG is the brain-child of a small group of friends who built the concept of entertainment engineering.  Once we got deeply burried into this thing, we realized we needed a name for our group.  A webmastering friend came up with VODMuG, which is actually an acronym.  "Virginia's Original Darkwave MUsic Group" was the slogan that our band Divine Heresy would tout back in 1996.  And, as far as we knew, it was correct.  After the band broke up, we thought it only fitting to keep the memory alive of what started this whole thing.

VODMuG offers many services in the field of entertainment engineering, currently at a negative financial gain.  Two DJ divisions provide music for social events such as dances, weddings, and receptions.  We also have the ability to design, set up, and fully run medium and semi-large scale concert light and sound systems.  Our recording capabilities include digital multitracking and mastering of electric and accoustic instruments of all types of music.  In the future, we plan to expand into the realm of video.
